I've had a quick search for articles on shin splints and have found surprisingly few complaints since they are the nemesis of my training. I can only seem to run for around a mile/mile and a half before they kick in, then I can do nothing but stop and sit down for a while and try something else. I used to think it was because I was too heavy to run (around 100Kg) but surely this can't be right? Anybody know what's the cause or any advice on how to cope with them / stop them? Thanks, sumo

One reason shin splints occur is due to the muscle not being able to expand any further. The muscle in question, the tibialis anterior, is in a sheath, this restricts expansion of the muscle.
To avoid shin splints don't run on hard surfaces or inclined, this will just aggravate the problem. To help it, rest, ice and stretch.
You can stop running and replace it with another form of cardio, just for a little while.
Train hard, but SMART!!
Obsession is a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated!

Yep keep to softer ground eg grassy parks or running tracks, which are a bit softer than concrete.
I was actually serving a lady in my jjb shop yesterday and she was buying trainers for running. Shes along distance runner and i told her i always felt a heavy feeling in my shins when i was running. She said its shin splint. She also said every runner gets them at some point, but if you give yourself time rest for a bit and do other types of cv and keep stretching and stuff then try again. She said the shins wont be strong enough for someone who runs once in a blue moon, but for someone who is used to it and so is the shins, it will decrease in the shins. PLus a good soft cushioned pair of trainers helps also. Anything from gel filled asics to more expensive nike shox etc.

Hey Bro,
When i was training for the marines i was doing alot of running and shin splints are a bugger truely they were the bain of my life at the time.
I went to the doc and physio and they referred me to a bio mechanics physio. Now this dude took a look at how i was walking and running and what he said was that the shin splints were being caused by the muscle down teh front of my shins firing and staying tense for a fraction of a second too long when i plant my heel which over and over was making my shins over work and fatigue.
What i had to do was really concentrate on how i was planting my feet and how long my shin muscles were engaged.
With some time and practice all wasw sorted and now it is never a problem for me.
Also of note is that most commonly it is your footwear that is unsuitable so maybe check out some proper running shoes like new balance asics etc... (not air max etc... as air bubbles cause achilies problems).
Hope this helps
